One of our bucket-list items was to travel in First Class on a long-haul flight. Our return flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles was originally booked on Cathay Pacific Business Class and I had wait-listed 2 seats on Singapore Airlines First Class from Hong Kong to San Francisco. The wait-list cleared only 10 days before travel date and I immediately ticketed the flight. I did have to pay 175$ for mileage redeposit fee for our cancelled Hong Kong to Los Angeles flight.
We arrived at the Silverkris Lounge in Hong Kong International Airport that caters mainly business class passengers and were led to a separate enclosure in the same lounge for first class travelers. The attendant brought a menu but we had already ordered the “Book the Cook” service on our flight and wanted to avoid any heavy meal before the flight.
After boarding announcement we made our way to the gate.
The Singapore Airlines First Class on the Boeing 777-300 consists of only 8 First class seats (2 rows of 1-2-1 seat configuration). The cabin felt very spacious and cozy at the same time. The only downside in having our wait-list clear so close to departure date was that me and Karen had furthest possible seats in the cabin (1A-2K).
All the flight attendants in our cabin were very friendly, courteous and fun. When we were all taking pictures in the cabin they would come by and offer to take our pictures together without even us asking them.
The area below the foot-cubby hole was wide and large enough to stow away my carry-on luggage and bag.
I was surprised to see that our first class cabin was served by 4 flight attendants!! The head purser came by and introduced herself. Right after her the flight attendant came by and offered pre-departure beverage. I requested champagne and the FA wanted to know if I wanted Dom or Krug!! Couldn’t help but chuckle. I opted for Dom Perignon.
Right after take-off, the FA came by with a bowl of mixed nuts and I opted out of champagne this time. Karen went ahead and tried some Singapore Sling.
I have never had caviar before so I was pretty excited to try it out !!
The soup was very creamy and delicious and the mussel tasted really good.
For the main entree, me and Karen had opted for “Book the Cook” service offered by Singapore Airlines where you have additional items to choose from in comparison to the limited selection on-board. We have had good experience before with this service back in 2012 during our Maldives trip. Karen opted for the same Lobster Thermidor that she ordered the last time while I went with a rack-of lamb.
The mango ice-cream was really delicious and by the time the cheese plate came by, I was close to full already.
After dinner the FA came by and wanted to know if I was ready for turn-down service. I went to the restroom to freshen up while she made the bed.
I had a pretty good sleep for about 6 hours and woke up just in time for breakfast.
By the time I was finished with breakfast we were only half hour away from San Francisco Airport. I spent the rest of the time watching rest of the movie that I had not finished earlier.
Bottomline:
Seat: *****
Service: *****
Food: *****
I cannot find any fault with the seat, service or the food. The seat was really wide with plenty of space for storing personal items as well as easy access to carry-on baggage below. The blankets were of very good quality and the mattress was very comfortable to sleep on.
The service was really excellent on this flight. All the flight attendants made us feel like we were at home and really took care of us. When we were taking pictures they always offered to take our pictures and it was obvious they were enjoying helping us make this a very memorable flight.
Both me and Karen agreed that we really enjoyed pretty much every menu item we had on this flight. Karen really enjoyed her lobster thermidor again while I really liked my rack of pan seared lamb.
